The spring season is one of rebirth and growth from the stagnancy and hibernation of wintertime. This season, we at From The Farmer had a major rebirth with the creation of a new website and an open marketplace to many more products than we've ever been able to offer before. Its been exciting + busy and certainly feels like we've turned over a new leaf.

Among all these changes, we've also had a wonderful array of community-focused events occur with many of our great partners and friends! Throughout the busyness of this past season, these events help us stay rooted to the heart of why we do what we do and how we're able to touch the community in positive ways. Check out a recap of a few fun springtime events we were fortunate to be a part of!

April 30: Capital Area Food Bank + From the Farmer Volunteer Day

We had a wonderful time at Capital Area Food Bank’s facility in NE DC, where they gave us a grand tour of their large warehouse and garden. It was fantastic to see their impressive operation and learn more about their mission to end hunger in our community. The large turnout of volunteers then powered through sorting and packing many bins of nonperishable items that will eventually go out to families and individuals in need.
We are, along with CAFB, so thankful to everyone who came out to educate themselves about the food bank’s inspiring operations and lend a hand in the warehouse with us!

May 7: True Gospel Baptist Church Community Day

True Gospel Baptist Church, located at 12th & W St NW in the U St Corridor, is a community of welcoming and warm folks who love to celebrate in adoration of their neighborhood and church. We’re fortunate to have joined them in early May for their second bi-annual Community Day by setting up a pop-up farmer’s market. Taking produce that had been extra from that week, we set up a farmer’s market stand and were able to sell almost all of it, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting True Gospel. This allows us to reduce food waste, feed those in the community with farm fresh produce and offer support to the church. We can’t wait to go back again in October, so pop it on your calendar to stop in and say hello if you’re in the neighborhood!

May 15: St. Jude Wine Country Garden Harvest

St. Jude is an amazing organization that’s always been near and dear to our hearts, and we were honored to be a part of their very first farm-to-table inspired dinner at Salamander Resort in Middleburg, VA!

With a handful of area wineries offering tastings, many chefs - including Chef Todd Gray from Equinox in DC, Salamander’s own Chef de Cuisine, Chris Edwards, and celebrity chef Carla Hall - we filled our bellies and our hearts as we listened to stories of those who received their treatment for childhood cancer at St. Jude’s state-of-the-art facility in Memphis, TN.

From the Farmer was very excited to have partnered with some of our farmers to donate produce, which was used in gorgeous centerpieces on each table, as well as local makers like Jenna Huntsberger from Whisked! to create a fun goody bag for each attendee to take home. It was a wonderful event!

May 16: Farm-to-Table Chat with St. Patrick’s 1st Grade Class

We had such a fun time talking with the first grade class at St. Patrick’s in NW DC, where FTF’s co-founder, Nick, spent his younger years! The class was in the middle of a farm-to-table segment and was kind enough to invite us to talk about what we do at FTF, how we work with our farmers, and answer their burning questions. Not only were they very educated about the life of veggies from seed to harvest, but the kids also had tasted, or had learned about, every single one of the seasonal fruit and veggie items we pulled out of the “magic red bag”. It was a blast!

June 4: Celebrate Petworth

We love, love, love the neighborhoods of DC - and Petworth is no exception. We had an amazing time handing out sweet strawberries, celebrating the neighborhood’s businesses and getting to know it's residents. We had a blast listening to the amazing music of Sticks + Bars, stopping in to say hi to our partners at Yoga Heights, and hangin' with the businesses and organizations nearby. We love the strong community feel of this NW DC neighborhood!
